Colorado Sand Dunes by PhilLewis Colorado Sand Dunes by PhilLewis
The Great Sand Dunes National Monument in Southern Colorado is one of the most amazing geological occurrences I have ever witnessed. What could be crazier than giant sand dunes hundreds of feet tall stretching out for miles right at the foot of snowcapped fourteen-ers? When you are hiking into the dunes it seriously feels like you are in the middle of the desert, something right out of Star Wars, only to summit the great dune to an unobstructed view of the Sangre de Cristos. I have hiked the dunes in many different climates, from blistering heat, to raging blizzards, it is always a crazy adventure. I have even taken my snowboard up in the middle of the summer. Whatever the conditions, the dunes never fail to provide an unforgettable hiking experience through one of the most stunning natural playgrounds in the world.

wow that's crazy. I'm actually heading down there on Friday. I am going to deliver this piece to the visitor's center gallery. It is going to be hanging there all summer, so if you have a chance... stop in and check it out!

The dunes are awesome. Have a good trip.

Peace.

Beautiful! The boldness kind of reminds me of the Group of Seven, but with more texture and done with felt markers! I think that you've earned a new watcher ;)

I love this, I am a Coloradoian, and I agree with everything you say. I have camped there many times, loving the sounds of Coyotes, Hawks, and the sand blowing across the ground :)

i hope one day I can make something as good as this.. the geometric patterns of the rocks in the background, the clouds and sky, the shadows and colours of the dunes.. the grey and yellow is inspired, as are the lines.. this is simply fantastic :)

i'm wondering the same thing as moeburn - do you have any larger versions of this picture available? i was thinking of buying the print of it, so it would make it a lot easier for me to decide if i were able to see it in more detail. thanks a lot, this is brillaint work. it would look good hanging on a wall juxtaposed beside a same sized, black and white, desert picture of a similar compostion like this --> [link] or [link] or [link] or even a colour pic like this --> [link] and [link]

this is also a great pic. i just love how you use very basic shapes to fill the thing oyu are painting, to give it dimension and a sence of realism. you can really se what you are drawing and thats whats so amazing about your art.
i really love how you have "desribed" the sky in this picture. its fundamental stuff that not many think of, especially when drawing, and thats what makes the whole pic interesting and an art piece of its own. GREAT! :worship:

Thanks for your comments. It is great to know that my work is reaching people out there in Deviant land. It seems like you really understand what it is that makes original artwork special and unique. You might get a kick out of my music also. I play in Storytyme from Boulder, CO. we write all kinds of crazy songs about the things we get into. [link]. I noticed your photo of the lake with the wakeboards...we have a song called Boardsport Pioneer which is all about growing up in Tahoe skateboarding, snowboarding, wakeboarding, kiteboarding...we seemed to be involved in a revolution of boardsports in Tahoe in the early 90's. It was a great place to be. And to capture some of those memories, we wrote a song about it. It was written very much at the same time I did the Tahoe piece. Both were to sort of "pay homage" to such an amazing place.

Thanks again for checking out my stuff. Hope your art takes you far...peace.
